Addicted to acoustic CD by Princess

I love acoustic music. Got hooked on acoustic covers of songs ever since I heard 'Boyce Avenue' on youtube a few years ago. I even attempted to learn the guitar to be a singer because this pretty girl I knew from Uni performed acoustic nights at this bar i used to hang out in. Alas, guitar proved to be difficult because I didn't know how to tune it to begin with. So I tried playing piano, but so far hasn't been successful YET. I am a very optimistic person. One day I'll get a tutor and then I'll be able to do it :)

Today I went to Novena for a walk and ended up buying a CD because the auntie at the shop seemed nice. I first heard 'Addicted to acoustic' playing in one of the shops at Haji Lane. I listened to almost the entire disc while waiting for my friend to try on pants and quite liked the songs. Ended up asking the shop owner what CD she was playing, which is seldom for me. Ok i'm just using coincidence/karma to rationalize my purchase.

So tadah ! I now own a brand new CD. First one I've bought in the last 3 years i think. I might pass it on to a friend after transferring the songs into my ipod. Go check it out ! The songs are acoustic interpretations of hit songs like 'Bad Romance' 'Tik Tok' 'You Belong With Me'. Can't wait to listen my $21.90 worth

Haha Feels so ancient to pull out my CD WALKMAN to listen to it. I still own my SONY WALKMAN ! it's pink :) It was my most prized possession in Primary 6 - the period when it was cool to burn CDs and give to friends. So far, my favourite song on the disc is 'Fallin For You' but all the songs are really really good. Wish the batteries on my discman weren't flat so I could bring it out but I can't seem to find replacements because they're out of production already. They don't even have them at Mustafa ! siannnnn

on a side note,
I noticed that alot of the current bloggers sport the eyeliner-spammed-fake-eyelashes-huge-eyeball-contacts look. They are all starting to look the same. I admire them for the effort to put on dressy makeup in all their pictures. Don't really think that is my style of being hawt. Some people will probably say my neutral look is just an excuse for laziness but whatever. That's me without eyeliner. Looks kinda the same.

Weekends without you

without you, I've been spending my weekends forging new memories, new rituals, new places to go with friends that will be around long after you've gone. I need to find a way to use photoshop to make my eyes look bigger. I used a purple eyeshadow pencil as eyeliner this weekend, which gives a more colorful and subtle definition to my eyes :) hehheh am i creative or what !?

Such sunny weather when I left the house and before I reached Somerset, it was pouring cats and dogs ! Had to stop at Newton to take an mrt to try and stay dry. Unfortunately, the 'sheltered' walkway to tripleonesomerset isn't power enough to keep you dry in a storm.

Buy 2 get 1 free Sangria during Happy Hour

thanks for 'lighting my fire' (smiles)

Headed to this quaint cafe in Scape called 'Curious Teppee' sorry i don't know if it has one or two P's. Took a picture of the cute cactus plants! I was telling ABK about seeing this swimming komodo lizard during my walk at Macritchie and how I said 'HI' to it and 'thanks for coming to visit me'. Now they think I make friends with all living things like plants. So here are my 3 new plant friends. Say hello to Tally, Yellowy and Redy. haha

Have a good Sunday everyone !

Black Swan inspired makeup

I was quite affected by the movie. Couldn't sleep at night because I was scared of the dark. So in attempt to get over the movie's effect on me, I decided to do a Black Swan inspired makeup look that took me 1.5hours to complete. TADAH !

natalie portman lookalike? haha

Here's how I got the look

1.starting with a fresh face, pile on the foundation .
To get a more ghostly, pale look, I applied concealer on my whole face. Only $2 from Daiso :)

2. Draw the outline of the feathers with white eyeliner, then go over the pattern with a black liquid eyeliner.

3. Fill in the rest of the feather details with the black eyeliner.

4. Fill in some of the feathers with black. Just get creative !
This was actually the result of several smudges when my hand got lazy.

5. Fill in the empty feathers with a silver eyeshadow base.
I used a wet brush to get a more luminous, shiny effect with the Silver.

6. Finish off with a matte blush on the cheeks and DARK RED lipstick for an eerie evil look.

6 simple steps and 1.5 hours later, I'm looking like the Black Swan. Would have loved to go out with this elaborate makeup and test people's reactions but it was actually quite uncomfortable with so much eyeliner. Surprisingly, it wasn't such a pain to remove thanks to my Laneige makeup remover :)

If anyone is as crazy as me to get so caught up in the movie, I'd definitely recommend you to try out this makeup look and work your inner Black Swan. I actually scared myself staring in the mirror trying to look evil/seductive.  haha HAVE FUN !

check out Michelle Phan or Jessica Harlow's videos on Youtube if you need more help.

Black Swan review

Black Swan review by thenewlimshuyan

A really intense experience. Magnified because I sat in the 5th row. Total confusion of what was real and what was imagined. Good job of leaving lots for interpretation since they don't explain the relationships between characters in the movie. I'm a buff for ripping stories apart and trying to understand the dynamics of the characters to come up with a conclusion. But this was one heck of a mind-fuck. You just don't even know where to start. Another amazing movie that left me feeling 'OMG-ed'.

Self pressure induced psychological hallucinations ultimately destroy Nina in her pursuit of the perfect performance. Watch the movie if you're able to stomach the super deep contents. Writing this review reminded me nothing is perfect and that I should relax more in life.

The story is about ballet but they make it attractive for the guys by throwing in a lesbian scene and some self-touching. I'm not really a Natalie Portman fan and i feel like I've seen a bit too much of her especially after watching 'No Strings Attached' over the weekend. Not that interested in seeing her so intimately. Anne Hathaway in 'Love and other Drugs' ftw.

The show is a direct parallel representation of 'Swan Lake'. Nina (Portman) wins the lead who has to play both the delicate White Swan and her evil sister the Black Swan. She is the perfect role for the White Swan, innocent, graceful and scared but lacks the recklessness and sensuality of the black swan. Then as she enters a twisted friendship with Lily (Kunis), a new dancer in the company, Nina gets in touch with her dark side.

the female time of the month

the week where you get agonizing stomach cramps, behave all crabby and just want to lie in bed all day. you know it. the week where 'da yi ma' comes to visit. MENSTRUATION. sounds like some weird alien term to guys who really want to avoid the time when we behave like scary babies. lashing out at them for no reason, crying over small stuff etc.

yupp. menses is always coming, always ending soon. someone once said 'there is only one group of girls who celebrate it's arrival'

for me, it's a week of behaving weirdly. having my period throws off my momentum. I'd be having a motivated week and then the next thing I know, I'm spiraling down into a lazy schlob in pyjamas all day. But it also allows me to constantly reinvent myself throughout the month. That's the fun part. REINVENTION ! i get to be whoever i want to be. It's especially fun to get all excited and energetic again when you can say goodbye to bloody pads. When you no longer feel nua and aren't afraid to wear a white skirt.

so all ladies ! rejoice in your feminity ! MENSTRUATION keeps our life colorful by giving us hormonal imbalance and mood swings !

we have the extra challenge of learning how to control our emotions :)

Marc Jacobs The XL Single on Reebonz.com Competition

Marc Jacobs XL Single
The Marc Jacobs XL Single is an absolute must-have for Fashionistas this Spring. Extremely versatile and functional, it is Marc Jacob's gift to girls who want to play up their wardrobe with bold colors and flirty prints this season.

As implied, The XL Single is supersized to fit all your essentials like sunglasses, sunscreen and a light cardigan. A leather insert on the handle makes it comfortable for carry and prevents the strap from digging into your skin or slipping off the shoulder. This ladylike bag will enhance your trendy Spring wardrobe without distracting attention away from your outfit.

If you dig the Chanel-reminiscent quilted leather and chains, this will give you the desired look for a few couple of grand less than a Chanel Jumbo Classic Flap. Functionality with style at a really good price !
Get yours at Reebonz.com

I like this bag because I can carry it with a bold outfit without fear that it will clash with what I am wearing. Plus, it is roomy and can fit all the things I bring out such as a book for reading and my planner.  Understated brown bags are my best companions because I like to dress in bright colors and prints. Even when I'm wearing a little black dress, I try to inject fun and spontaneity by adding a colored accessory like my bright red watch. You can get away with wearing anything in Singapore because you don't really get different seasons.

Here is a day-to-night look that would be fabulous with this bag.

What would Spring be without a classic head-to-toe white outfit. Inspired by 70s style icon Bianca Jagger, this is perfect for hanging out at a cafe meeting friends, reading a book or blogging. The strappy sandals add glamour to this casual day-time look. Scarf tied as a headband even doubles as a shawl if it gets chilly.

It's time to jazz things up when the sun goes down. I re-use the white scarf for a night look. Tying it as a sexy top, I match it with a peach colored scallop detail skirt and add a sparkly peach rose brooch. The red belt accentuates the waist and balances out the stockings. Wear 4 inch heels to make your legs look long and thin.

Vday week Day 3

I don't think Valentines should be just one day. St Valentines shouldn't be so lazy. It should last an entire week. Then everyone could pick a day in the week they are free to celebrate. Why stress yourself to finish work early on that particular day in order to make it in time for reservations. Maybe Wednesdays suit you better. Who's to tell you when you can or cannot celebrate your love for each other.

I never understood why a guy would ask a girl out on Valentines Day. It's like you're creating some sort of expectation that things between the 2 would move to the next level. Its too complicated. But relationships are complicated anyway.

You never know what a guy is thinking, and whether he means what he says. I admit I'm guilty of slipping in a lie or two just to make the situation less uncomfortable. Like maybe I'm alone with a guy in his house and he asks me an awkward question while waiting for our friends to arrive. I'm gonna answer him something he wants to hear but isn't totally the truth. I don't want the rest of the time to be weird.

My advice: Don't play games with our minds boys. Tell us how you really feel. If you like me, but aren't ready, just let me know. It might hurt the ego a bit, but at least I'll be aware to keep my eyes open for other options and not be waiting around for a guy who just isn't that into me. Thanks. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather you be blunt and say it straight. I don't like games and I don't like guessing. Games get boring after awhile.

Vday week Day 2

bought a new clothes rack yesterday for my room! so excited cos i hope it will make my room neater and keep random clothes from piling on my bed when i don't bother to hang them back up again. haha
Hanging lots of peach colored items on it now to try and attract some tao hua yun (peach blossom luck)

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY EVERYONE !!

had another uninspiring valentines day. Vday is totally overrated. maybe i'm just not a believer because i haven't had like a really romantic Vday date. mostly i've spent them alone/ at home/ with my family/ studying for exams

but nonetheless, its a time when
-girls wait for guys to ask them out
-girls feel super excited getting ready for their date (new outfit, nice hair, makeup)
-girls go gaga when guys give them presents (chocolates, stuffed toys, flowers)

-boys feel stressed that they have to ask the girl they like out
-boys fret over what to buy, where to go, what to do
-boys pockets get burnt trying to impress the girl

i'm not anti-valentines day. I just don't think it should be any particular day of the year. It's too stressful for both parties. It just gives businesses a really good excuse to jack up the prices of everything like flowers and food.  Seriously.

Take my advice: Valentines Day doesn't have to be the one time of the year when you die if you don't have a date. Ask that girl you like out any other time of the year. Give your significant other a meaningful present just because you feel like it. Buy flowers when it's on offer. Go on a romantic date anytime. Don't wait for the one day of the year to make a move.

I'm a hopeless romantic but I would appreciate a guy who will bring me out on any day and make it feel like its Valentines Day. I just want to be unique. I don't follow the flow of what everyone else is doing.

Be random: Clap if you feel loved !

had an amazing/ interesting weekend

Sorry if I offended anyone. Some situations are just scary for me. On closer inspection maybe it was fear that  compelled you to friendship, not interest or helpfulness. Oh well.

Had an amazing weekend of fun. Thanks to Audrey, Kenneth, Becky, Walter and new-found friends at Players. They played special requests like 'Fireworks' for us :)

woke up to clean my room for a wii party ! we cooked yummy lim-traditional-food with special chinese new year bunny decorations haha

Headed down to Zouk for amazing Electronic beats ! Sis helped me curl my hair which all dropped to just look wavy and bouncy by the end of the night.

 Plum shots are delish !

See they rained sparkly confetti ! so pretty

Met up with my sweet Perc 04 babes at NEX for dinner at The Ship just now. They decorated the place with heart shaped balloons and the menu was changed to include V day sets. A place with character and the staff are nice and friendly.
Our heart shape picture is sooo cute !

Happy Valentines Day everyone !

attempt at Michelle Phan's eco-friendly beauty (curling hair without heat)

Using an old T-shirt to curl your hair ??
that's me halfway done (and almost wanting to give up already)
method:
You get an old T-shirt and cut it into thin strips of cloth. Section your hair. Do like you would with a curling iron but instead you are securing the cloth to your hair and rolling it up. Secure in place by tying a knot. To watch her video, go to Michelle Phan's youtube

It's harder than it looks and took me awhile to figure out how to roll the hair. But I managed to finish curling ALL MY HAIR in about half an hour. I went out for dinner with my family like that haha. Looking a bit like a new year lantern ! it was ren ri anyway so it's fine to look festive :)
the right side failed so i pinned it up. Going for a sweet side swept look to cover it up. Guess it just takes a bit of practice. I did the right side of my head first so maybe i wasn't so good at it yet. Headed down to zouk where i drank too much whisky. Culprits know who you are.

3 reasons why Lim Shuyan should win a pair of movie tickets to 'I Am Number Four' preview screening ?

3 reasons why I should win a pair of movie screening tickets to 'I Am Number Four'

1. My favourite number is 4 !
Chinese people think that number 4 is an unlucky number. But I like it. Hanging out in groups of 4 is fun. There are 4 people in my family. 4 inch heels make me look the best. etc etc

2. The show is about aliens disguised as humans (finally)
The recent movies I've watched about aliens such as District 9 and Alien Vs Predator always portray extraterrestriall beings as scary, freaky, weird looking 'monsters'. Can't wait to see how an alien falls in love with a human.

3. Alex Pettyfer plays the lead as Number 4
He's handsome, around my age and I'll probably swoon at his sexy Brit-ish accent haha. The idea of aliens living and working among us wouldn't be too bad if they all looked like him. The world can never have too many good looking people :p

Catch I Am Number Four Movie starting from 24th February 2011 and join the official Disney Studios Singapore Facebook Twitter page!

i am good enough where i am right now

i look at popular bloggers, famous youtubers, blogshop owners and feel like what they have is so far away from where i am now.
i look at pretty people, celebrities, models, fashionistas and feel like they're always so thin and look so much better than me

when i see girls who are skinny, i always wonder if they are born like that or if they really starve themselves/diet in order to look that way (because they think celebrities ought to look like that) or maybe they just look skinny but are actually the same size as me in person? (self note to remember when i saw kaykay in person)

but you know what, everyone is different. i look different and i am unique. i am full of facial expressions, weird noises, silly new phrases and thats ok. i'm special and what i have to offer is unlike anything anyone has now. people have been doing this stuff for years and i've only just started. i've been pursuing other interests. this is another of my fun experiences to learn stuff and share with others how to be AWESOME LIKE ME

this is my favourite pick me up song:

updates on my trip to Malaysia for CNY

i travel to malacca every chinese new year to visit my grandmother and other relatives. that means i get my angpao money in Ringgit. but i'm not complaining cos i can spend it shopping when i go to malaysia :)

here are some cool stuff from my trip

look at this white peacock ! it's not an albino because it has blue eyes not red eyes. supposedly a peacock that opens his fan at you means you'll get good luck ! yayy good luck for Lim Shuyan in 2011 !!

look at all the yummy things we ate at satay celup :)

this cute fish cake thingies are so funny ! they taste quite yum anyway

see this huge caterpillar/moth baby chilling on my grandma's plant. no cruelty to animals and other creepy crawlies but when bugs are attacking your plants, you better get rid of them. and that was the last we saw of it. if you were on another plant, you might have turned into a moth. sorry.
